PEACE CANDLES from BETHLEHEM

St James the Deacon has been given four original "Peace Light of Bethlehem" candles, seen above in front of our Crib, by parishioner Maureen Gillespie, on behalf of her grandson Oliver Gillespie, 7, and his local Cub Scout group "DPSG Rodelheim" in Frankfurt, Germany.

As an annual tradition, which started in Austria in 1986, a scout from Austria lights a candle from the "Eternal Flame" in the Nativity Grotto in Bethlehem, Jesus's birthplace. The Peace Light is then flown to Austria from where it is distributed at a Service of Dedication to Scouts and Guides from across Europe, who bring it back to their own local cub scout groups, as a message of Peace, and for use in ecumenical services throughout the Continent.  Scouts and Guides then distribute the flame on to other churches, hospitals, old people homes, prisons, and places of public, cultural and political importance - to anybody that appreciates the significance of this "gift".  Oliver is pleased to share this message of Peace with us at St James the Deacon Church, with warm greetings from Germany.
